- Abstract
People everywhere demand responsible business leadership, and a growing number of business leaders seek to show they do what they should and, in turn, are socially responsible. Companies organize social initiatives in different ways. A sample of 23 companies examined by the Social Enterprise Knowledge Network (SEKN) shows the kind of organizational models developed by firms to implement social responsibility varies depending on the initiative undertaken. Companies supporting philanthropy implement social responsibility strategies via foundations; when they partner with social welfare organizations, efforts are not only philanthropic but utilitarian. To the extent that social responsibility is aligned with business strategy, social goals are integrated with company routine and implemented by similar processes. If business leaders seek to implement effective and lasting social action, initiatives must be carefully chosen and ably organized. If they seek to generate social value, philanthropy is no longer enough. If they seek to generate both social well-being and wealth creation, it appears the way to organize is to blend social and business strategy. Experience shows that a challenge faced by business is to make social goals a day-to-day effort, not a business sideline.
