- Abstract
An article is presented that reports on late 19th century Japanese woodblock prints and their depiction of the U.S. and Americans. The article discusses a print by Adachi Ginko that was acquired by the Princeton University Art Museum and contains a depiction of scenes from the 1879 play "The Strange Tale of the Castaways: A Western Kabuki (Hyōryō kidan seiyō kabuki) by Kawatake Mokuami. Information is provided on the artist's background and his other works, noting how he was affected by social changes in Japan in the 1800s. The article also describes kabuki theater producer Morita Kan'ya, American and European influence on Japan, and issues of modernization.
