Faculty Role Perceptions and Preferences in the Seventies.

- Abstract
A random sample of faculty from four categories of institutions of higher education were questioned about various aspects of their work roles, with emphasis upon the teaching-research "dichotomy." As expected, type of institution was found to be a good predictor of individual research or teaching preference and amount of emphasis a school placed upon either activity. Other important findings were: (1) faculty preferred teaching to be the primary personnel criterion at all schools except at the Ph.D. granting institutions, (2) research interest was found to penetrate even to the junior- college level, (3) a large minority of faculty at small private schools and state colleges reported that they were unable to clearly perceive the primary promotion and tenure criterion, (4) inability to determine the basis for promotion and tenure was found to be inversely related to academic rank and, (5) no association between age and research preference was found except at the Ph. D. -granting schools, where younger professors were more inclined toward research and older professors toward teaching.
