- Abstract
This article investigates the relationship between pleasure reading in native language and English as a Second language and writing proficiency in English language in adult subjects. Research results supporting a strong correlation between amount of pleasure reading and writing proficiency demonstrate the importance of reading in developing other language skills. The 79 subjects, all foreign graduate students admitted to Ohio State University, Ohio for the Fall 1985 term, included speakers of various Asian, European, and Middle Eastern languages. After subjects in each makeup session had given a written response to one of three open-ended composition topics, they were given a questionnaire asking them to estimate the time they spent each week reading for pleasure in their native language and in English language. Pleasure reading was defined as reading done only for one's enjoyment. It did not include reading related to school or work. The questionnaire also solicited information related to subject age, sex, native language, and years spent studying English language.
