- Abstract
The article discusses the teaching of philosophy in Brazilian high schools, which became mandatory due to a law passed in 2008. The idea that philosophical education represents a means to a more engaged and enlightened citizenry and eventually a more just society is explored, and the political and academic climate which led to the mandate is discussed. The author's experiences discussing philosophy with Brazilian high school students are also presented along with information on class and racial divisions in Brazilian society.
