- Title
A Critical Preface to Koestler's "Scum of the Earth."
- Authors
Walker, Robert G.
- Abstract
This essay discusses Arthur Koestler's "Scum of the Earth" and his other literary works. His reputation in the scientific community waned because of his support of ESP and the paranormal. He is also a believer of suicide, and took his own life when he was seventy-seven in 1983. His writings ignore traditional academic classification. Much of the success of the novel originated from his identification of and with its titular characters. His work "Darkness of Noon" has historical consideration but lost its impact with the fall of Soviet Communism. He was an alcoholic, and his relationships with women were troubled.
