- Abstract
A study published in the Journal of Medical Virology explores the potential link between acne and COVID-19 susceptibility, hospitalization, and severity. The study utilizes genetic data and Mendelian randomization to investigate this connection. The results indicate that while there is no causal link between acne and COVID-19 susceptibility or severity, there is a significant association with increased COVID-19 hospitalization risk. Key genetic variants associated with acne are linked to genes involved in metabolic-associated fatty liver disease and androgen-sensitive disorders. The study emphasizes the need for preventive measures against COVID-19 for individuals with acne and suggests that managing acne could potentially reduce hospitalization rates during outbreaks. However, the study's findings are limited to European ancestries and further research is needed to generalize the results to other ethnic groups.
