- Abstract
Feeding space allowance might affect the activity, health of legs and hooves of sows, and the survival of piglets. Ten TBP gilts were evaluated on score of legs and hooves, then allocated to crate or un-crate group. Sows were moved to farrowing crate or adjustable farrowing crate and nursing for 4 weeks. The adjustable crate was widened at the third week post parturition. All weaned sows were moved back to the pregnant pen as same as the previous one. Results showed that there was no difference in score of legs and hooves within three parities of sows. The un-crate sows had higher (P < 0.05) activity during feeding time. The walking speed of the sows moving to the farrowing house or moving back to the pregnant house was not different between treatments. There was no difference in survival rate of suckling piglets between treatments. In summary, raising space had no effect on the legs and hooves of sows and survival rate of piglets, but sows raised in un-crate pen had higher activity.
