- Abstract
Each year the Ernest Hemingway Foundation and PEN New England award the PEN Hemingway prize for the year's best first work of fiction. The award is presented at a gala reception at the John F. Kennedy Library in Boston, Massachusetts. The 2018 PEN Hemingway prize was awarded to Weike Wang for her book, Chemistry (Knopf). This year we are pleased to present the keynote address of Ricardo Cortez Cruz. Cruz is the author of two novels-Straight Outta Compton and Five Days of Bleeding-and over forty short stories. He teaches creative writing at Illinois State University. He is finishing a third body of (s)language titled Premature Autopsies: Tales Of Darkest America.
