- Abstract
This article presents a detailed analysis and criticism of one short chronicle record from the 1850s. In his chronicle, the České Budějovice burgher and town economic official Georg Millauer recorded a brief biography of the retired military veteran Vavřinec Pokorný; he allegedly died at the age of 112 and worked almost until his death in a brewery in Ostrolovský Újezd. Comparison with sources of an official nature showed the considerable unreliability of Millauer's data, despite the fact that Millauer, as the manager of the Ostrolovský Újezd estate, had access to official documents and even knew Pokorný personally. The chronicler is mistaken in his depiction of Pokorný's military career, but there are also uncertainties about his age. In comparison to the 112 years reported by Millauer, the register of orphans shows the age of 107 years, and the parish chronicle of deaths even a mere 97 years. The case, thus analyzed, shows that the records of burgher chronicles must be approached with caution, even though the author recorded events from his current point of view.
