- Abstract
In this study, the words of preference and criticism used by Ibn Hisham en-Nahvi (d. 761/1360), one of the pioneers of Arabic grammar, in his works on grammar are discussed. Ibn Hisham made references to many language issues from previous linguists and language schools, did not adhere to any school to the degree of bigotry, discussed the opinions and evidences he conveyed with an objective approach, and made choices between these views. Using the qiyas and ta'lil method, the author preferred the views and ideas that he found strong evidence, regardless of which school or linguist he belonged to, and criticizing the weak or inaccurate approaches, and presented his reasons. Evaluating the views he conveyed, Ibn Hisham rated his opinions as sahîh, râcih, savâb, zahir; He used many different concepts such as merdûd, batil, fâsid and vehm for the views that he thought should be criticised and abandoned. While he used some of the concepts in a separate sense, he also used some of them closely or synonymously. The aim of this study is to present a general point of view about Ibn Hisham's method of preference and criticism and his attitude towards other linguists by presenting the meanings in which he used the aforementioned expressions.
