- Abstract
The intensification of production systems and the increase in the number of animals in milking per establishment, has produced an increase in the so-called “production diseases” with their negative influence on reproductive efficiency. This clinical or subclinical conditions, can modify ruminal fermentation patterns and, the endocrinological environment of different organs or tissues. The dairy cow, since the last three weeks of the dry period and the first 30 days of lactation, has its immune system reduced in its functionality. From calving, shows a significant reduction in consumption, negative energy balance, lipolysis, loss of body condition, insulin resistance, somatotrophic axis uncoupling, and oxidative stress. These causes contribute to the fact that 30 to 50 % are affected, between calving and the first month of lactation, by some metabolic or infectious disease. The objective of this review is to carry out, first of all, a summary update of the nutritional risk factors in the transition period and the problems that occur in the peripartum. Second, the mention of descriptive statistics of some conditions that occur in the transition period and in the first third of lactation, obtained by several colleagues and by our professional activity in the field work, also including mastitis and infectious pododermatitis. In addition, the corresponding data analysis was carried out with the scientific-technical foundations that support the detrimental effects of these conditions on reproductive efficiency.
