- Title
Historical Trauma among the Apaches at Mescalero.
- Authors
Stockel, H. Henrietta
- Abstract
The article examines the theme of historical trauma as it applies to the Apaches residing in Mescalero, New Mexico. The author traces this trauma to U.S. genocidal actions that removed the Chiricahua Apaches from their culturally-important ancestral lands. Disease, low food supplies, and assimilationist education also stripped away Apache identity and led to trauma. The article identifies substance abuse among the Apaches as the main effects of historical trauma.
