The article focuses on the role and history of water in U.S.-Mexico relations. It is mentioned how the U.S. and Mexico have been cooperatively sharing their common hydraulic infrastructure and resources of the Rio Grande River and the Colorado River throughout the 20th century. The history of the 1906 Water Convention and its division of the Rio Grande's resources between the two nations is given. Additional treaties and agreements established in 1944 and onward are also described including the 1944 Water Treaty and the sustainable development policies of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).
