- Abstract
This study investigates the transmission contour (shape of the mass peak) through the numerical simulation of ion trajectories in a quadrupole field with small spatial harmonics. The impact of the octupole component on the field is examined, demonstrating a possibility of achieving a resolving power of 5000 with a 2% octupole component and a negative constant component on a pair of electrodes of a smaller radius. A stability diagram near the working apex is significantly affected by the octupole field. The data from the previous experiment qualitatively validated the simulation results.
