- Abstract
Due to the facilities they provide in daily life, the internet and social media come first among technological devices which are widdiy used. Even though is more widespread among young people, statistics show that internet use has increased among the elderly. In the current study, the views of middle aged and elderly people over the internet and social media were investigated. The population of the study comprised of middle aged and elderly individuals and the sampling was comprised of 106 middle aged and elderly people living in Ankara. Of the middle aged and elderly individuals participating in the study, 42.5% were at the age of 64 and below, 59.4% were men, 50.9% were single and 41.5% were able to use the internet. Among those being able to use the internet, 70.5% used the internet to make a research and learn, 15.9% used it with the purpose of mailing and they spent approximately 98.82 minutes on the internet and 39.22 minutes on social media. As for the ones not being able to use the internet, 19.4% expressed that they wanted to learn how to use it. On the other hand, 27.4% of the individuals wanted to learn how to use the social media, 45.3% thought social media is a loss of time and 37.7% believed that it is an idle work. Also, 53.8% of the individuals wanted to use the internet for purpose of communicating with friends, 51.9% for the purpose of education and 57.5% used it to chat with former friends. Those who would like to use the internet for the purpose of education were 51.1% in the age group below 65 and 24.6% in the age group over 65. The ones who would like to join a group they are interested was 40% in the age group below 65 and 21.3% in the age group over 65. The individuals who would like to share the pictures, videos and writings they liked were 66.7% in the age group below 65 and while it was 41% in the age group over 65. The internet and social media could give such great benefits for the middle aged and elderly people as entertainment, learning, spending time and taking up a profession or so. Realizing the projects that would make the usage of these media widespread could make significant support to their daily lives.
