- Abstract
Gene editing is a widely-used frontier biotechnology at present. This paper aims to explore the academic outputs, research focus and development tendency of gene editing technology in different fields, and provide reference for the development of gene editing technology.[Methods] Based on Scopus Database, gene-editing-related papers between January 2014 and June 2020 have been retrieved. SciVal analysis tool has been used to analyze the data from the perspectives of discipline distribution, output quality, collaboration and research hotspots to define the research status, existing problems and development trend of gene editing technology.[Results] The development of gene editing technology has gone through three generations of technology(ZFN,TALEN,CRISPR/Cas),and is now in the booming period of CRISPR/Cas. Gene editing technology covers 11 disciplines such as biochemistry and genetics. The overall quality of relevant academic outputs is high, field-weighted citation impact(FWCI) reaches 1.88 between January 2014 and June 2020,and the proportion of TOP 1% highly-cited publications is 5.7%,which is greatly higher than the world average level. According to total citations, the United States, China and Germany rank top 3 of top 10 countries, and Harvard University, MIT and Howard Hughes Medical Institute rank top 3 of top 10 institutions. The scholar with the most academic outputs is Zhang Feng of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. The proportion of domestic and international collaborative research on gene editing is as high as 89.9%. Gene editing technology has a rapid upgrading speed and high research level in the field of animals, and the overall research level of gene editing technology in China remains to be improved.[Conclusions] Gene editing technology is a kind of biotechnology which can be widely used. In addition to disease diagnosis and therapy, the application prospect of CRISPR/Cas in agriculture is worth expecting, and collaborative research is the main approach and development direction of gene editing research. It can be expected that gene editing technology will provide an important boost to the rapid development of human medicine and life science, and expand the application fields of bioresearch and biotechnology. Gene editing efficiency, targeting specificity, off-target and delivery system efficiency are the key problems to be solved for the development of gene editing technology.
