- Abstract
This article, published in the International Journal of Dermatology, explores the nail matrix onychodermis and its role in determining the color of the lunula, the half-moon shaped whitish area of a nail. The authors discuss the existence of a specialized mesenchyme called onychodermis, which contains nail-specific fibroblasts. They hypothesize that the lunula's white color originates from the onychomatricodermis within the onychodermis. The study provides histological, immunohistochemical, and molecular evidence to support this hypothesis.
