- Abstract
"Able to Lead: Disablement, Radicalism, and the Political Life of E. T. Kingsley" is a biography written by Ravi Malhotra and Benjamin Isitt that sheds light on the life of E. T. Kingsley, a little-known figure in early twentieth-century Canadian socialism. The authors reconstruct Kingsley's story from scattered references in the public record and reminiscences from friends and associates, as he left behind no papers or personal writings. Kingsley was a charismatic radical who played a prominent role in the Socialist Party of Canada and the Socialist Party of British Columbia, advocating for the abolition of "wage slavery" and criticizing capitalism. The biography also explores the impact of Kingsley's disability, resulting from a railway accident, on his radical politics and personal life. While the study contributes to our understanding of Canadian radicalism, it offers limited insight into disability history.
