- Abstract
An essay is presented on indigenous labor and the history of the hops industry in the western U.S. Emphasis is given to Native Americans of the Pacific Slope region and hop picking as a means to articulate sovereignty, establish leadership credentials, and foster kinship bonds. Other topics include the labor patterns of growing and harvesting hops for beer production, the assimilation of Native Americans, and self-sufficiency.
