The article discusses the May 4, 1957 rejection of teletype operator Rhoda Hils's application for membership in the New Haven, Connecticut local of the International Typographical Union (ITU). Topics include the identity of Hils as a strikebreaker, the role of gender in the typesetting industry after the introduction of teletypesetting (TTS), and the switch to TTS as a form of mechanization.
