- Abstract
The article presents information on Child Welfare League of America's guidelines for procedures regarding retention or destruction of closed case record material in the U.S. It discusses several guidelines including voluntary organizations developing and maintaining written procedures, and the role of legal advice related to case materials. It suggests maintaining a brief record for every closed case, and destroying record material through paper shredders. It is stated that records for protective service should be retained for 10 years after date of closing, and for all children in any form of placement, records should be held for seven years. It advises child welfare agencies to provide safeguards for confidentiality while collecting and storing information in computerized systems.
