The need for race-based data in Canada.

- Abstract
Canada prides itself in being a multicultural society, however, the routine collection of race-based data in relation to health outcomes has not been a priority. The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the necessity for government leaders to take action by promoting the collection of race and socio-demographic data to determine the impacts of the pandemic on marginalized communities. However, more work must be done to highlight the inequities that impact the health outcomes of racialized people affected by other communicable and non-communicable diseases in Canada. Approaches to care through a colourblind lens can promote implicit bias and covert racism while undermining the role of race as a social determinant of health. To determine the impacts of institutional and medical racism on racialized Canadians, there is a need to prioritize the collection of race-based data. These data are necessary to inform and elicit actionable responses through the implementation of initiatives and the empowerment of communities.
