- Abstract
This document is a keynote symposium presentation by attorneys Brian Panish and Jesse Creed, discussing a case they worked on involving a gas well blowout in Porter Ranch, California. The blowout resulted in the largest natural gas leak in US history, causing personal injury and property damage to 36,000 people. The attorneys negotiated a global settlement of $1.8 billion but faced challenges in allocating the funds among the claimants. They highlight the need for best practices in handling mass tort litigation and discuss the process they followed, including the use of FLIR cameras to capture the incident and the involvement of a legal services company called BrownGreer. They also sought court approval and review for the settlement and appointed a retired judge as a guardian ad litem to oversee the process. The presentation concludes with gratitude for the attendees' work and involvement in the Restatements.
