- Abstract
Purpose: This paper discusses the practices of electricity tariff setting in a few selected countries in Europe, Australia, Thailand and Malaysia Design/methodology/approach: Interview with the regulators and institutional economics literatures. Findings: ERC, EGAT, MEA and PEA play important roles in Thai's electricity industry. The tariff setting mechanism allows the generators to set the base tariff and adjusted against the fluctuation of fuel costs. As for Australia, the country's electricity industry empowered by AEMC, AER and AEMO. They rule the national electricity market, regulate network businesses and monitor the electricity market operations. The electricity market in the country is relatively open with the advent of a number of power generators and wholesalers. Research limitations/implications: The research allows regulators and industry players to view different perspective of tariff setting regulation and mechanism Practical implications: The outcome of this project will provide a significant view for Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) in modelling its tariff setting. Originality/value: This research provides a summary of regulatory structure and tariff setting mechanism between two countries.
