- Abstract
This study aims to interpret how the practice of fox hunting was appropriated in Porto Alegre and which was its culture representations produced in the first half of the twentieth century. The documentary corpus used consisted of articles from newspaper, magazine and literature. Fox hunting in the city was promoted by equestrian clubs. It was identified the participation of women in this type of equestrian event. Fox hunting also presented evidence of sportivization, such as: level playing field in the competition, and rationalization. Peculiar rules were drawn up according to the context of horse organizations that promoted the practice. These rules reinforced the appreciation given to the hunting path. However, the appropriation of fox hunting in Porto Alegre situation dismissed the excitement of a violent game, rendered by dogs and foxes in their original settings.
