- Abstract
Our field survey in the forefield of the open-cast Nástup Tušimice (NTM) coal mine (the upper Hutná valley, 2007-2009) included several non-destructive methods, primarily a surface artefact survey. The survey was conducted in an analytical manner, using a regular grid of circular units (50 m in diameter) located by GPS. Each unit was walked with 50% surface coverage, while the type of crop, cultivation phase and other conditions for surface visibility were recorded. The results of the survey were processed in GIS, together with other archaeological and geographic information. The obtained set of data represents a detailed systematic sample of the surface archaeological record of a large landscape area (8.9 km2). This "snap" is also unique in that it will be possible to compare it to the continuous archaeological excavation that has already been launched in 2007 and which will continue for the next 15-20 years. In combination with additional information, the results of our survey make it possible to venture an evaluation of the archaeological potential of an area that will disappear completely in the coming years. In order to make our results more reliable, attention was likewise paid to the discussion of post-depositional transformations within the surface assemblages collected. The main factors of these are identified as follows: the time-span from the last deep ploughing, surface visibility conditions and the rate of soil erosion. An unfavourable combination of these aspects could have caused a reduction in the number of surface finds by several orders of magnitude. Post-depositional processes have also had an indirect, but substantial, impact on the composition of finds according to their age.
