- Abstract
The present study comes out with the results of a quantitative survey among tourists visiting Bhialangana Valley, Uttarakhand. Their attitudes and perceptions towards infrastructure, tourism impacts and policies, amenities/ facilities and the behaviour of local residents are the key issues discussed here. In total 110 questionnaires accounting for approximately 2% of the population size from Ghuttu, Gangi Village, Budhakedar pilgrimage site, Sahashtratal Lake Basin, Khatling Glacier and Panwali Kantha Meadows were collected where 5773 tourists (both national and international) visited in year 2008. A factor analysis was performed on tourists' agreement with different facilities and amenities in order to obtain different components. These components were analyzed further to show the tourists' perceptions of economic, environmental and socio-cultural impacts of tourism in the valley affects their attitudes towards different facilities. The paper also aims to analyze the tourism impacts on local economic conditions, generating employment and its multiplier effects in an economy of the Bhilangana river basin. Altogether, the study provides a brief overview of guest-host relationship in the region, recognizing that a comprehensive assessment can only be made through community participation.
