- Abstract
The rhetoric of cultural planning in postindustrial cities is closely related to the activities of museums (or other major cultural centers), which no longer belong "exclusively" to the cultural sphere. This is well illustrated by the so-called "Bilbao effect," the aspiration of many cities of the world, now intensively popularized in Vilnius. For quite a few years, Vilnius has been encouraging cultural tourism, especially in the form of conferences and pro spective world congresses. Quite expectedly, this process is marked not only by the unification of services (for example, in the form of quickly spreading franchise-type hotel architecture), but also by the offering of "uniqueness." In this respect, the Lithuanian capital is not different from many other cities of the world (not only Europe!), which are competing among themselves for a "better" image with the help of a neo-liberal economy. In this article, some principles of the New York Guggenheim museum activity under the leadership of Thomas Krens are analyzed as an exemplary case of the development of the twenty- first century global museums. Additionally, Vilnius municipal cultural planning is discussed against the context of the regeneration of other postindustrial cities.
