Wheat varieties and technological change in Europe, 19th and 20th centuries: New issues in economic history.
- Authors
PUJOL-ANDREU, JOSEP
- Abstract
The article examines the development of wheat yields in Great Britain, France, Italy, and Spain during the 19th and 20th centuries as a means to explore the general impact of biological innovation on European economic development. The author asserts that this study fills a gap in general European agrarian history, which often avoids discussing the economic impact of such innovation. Emphasis is given to the extension of wheat cultivation in these nations. Innovations discussed include improved fertilization procedures, phytosanitary treatment, and decreases in plant height. The importance of straw to the development of different wheat varieties is also detailed.
