- Abstract
This article on Simone Bussières's novel L'héritier (1951) seeks to highlight the patriarchal underpinnings of the story of a woman who is asked by an ex-lover to have a child – a son – whom he will then adopt with his wife. The request states that if the child is a girl, the woman will keep it and the man will provide for it. After much moral questioning, the female character accepts, then unwisely reveals herself to the wife in a misunderstanding. Adopting a feminist materialist approach, the analysis focuses on the literary procedures used by the author to legitimize the female character or even exonerate her, instead condemning the male character, representative of the patriarchal community.
