- Abstract
The article explores author Flannery O'Connor's love of mayonnaise as a signifier of mother-daughter relationships and maternal codependency in her stories in the short story collection "A Good Man Is Hard to Find." Topics discussed are role of food as a means of communication, importance of domestic routine to maintain order over farms and homes, use of food to manipulate male interlopers, use of food to control children, food as a means of manipulation and negotiation, and food as currency.
