- Title
Dirty South: "The Help" and the Problem of Black Bodies.
- Authors
Foster-Singletary, Tikenya
- Abstract
A literary criticism is presented which discusses the problematic nature of the depiction of African American characters and their bodies in the novel "The Help" by Kathryn Stockett. The author explains the novel's focus on African American domestic labor and race relations in Jackson, Mississippi, during the civil rights movement. It is argued that the novel emphasizes the difference of its black characters through these descriptions of their bodies and speech, thereby marginalizing them.
