- Abstract
The article presents a case study of a patient suffering from great auricular neuralgia. The most common facial pain syndromes include the trigeminal, glossopharyngeal, and occipital neuralgias. The great auricular nerve is not considered to be typically at risk for the development of neuralgia, and the only documented case of great auricular neuralgia apparently resulted from cardiac pacemaker implantation. A man was admitted to the hospital after paresthesias and electric shocklike pains in the auricle and angle of the jaw. A clinical diagnosis of great auricular neuralgia was made, and the patient was treated with gabapentin. This case of great auricular neuralgia was not linked to recognizable causes, and the diagnosis was strongly supported by the specific characteristics of the pain, the well-defined cutaneous region involved, and by the dramatic response to a therapy known for its efficacy in suppressing other neuralgias.
