- Abstract
In 1783 Vittorio Alfieri wrote two sonnets in Piedmontese language that still constitute a small mystery. The discovery of a manuscript by Count Amedeo Ferrero of Ponziglione allows us to shed light on them. In fact, through them, Alfieri did not only answer the criticisms against the first edition of his tragedies; he also wanted to participate in the debate on which language would be spoken at the court of Savoy. During the reign of Vittorio Amedeo III (1773-1796) there was a large movement for the adoption of Piedmontese as a “national language”, in place of both French and Italian. It was a very important debate to understand the progressive definition of the “Piedmontese nation”.
