- Authors
BLOCK, NICK
- Abstract
The article demonstrates how political activist and author Nathan Birnbaum at the nexus of literature and politics in the early 1900s, came to embody the recurring literary figure of a messianic saviour from the West. Topics covered include Birnbaum's messianism to exhibit the importance of the intercontinental gaze on the Jewish Other at the intersection of politics and literature, and how he used his intercultural position as a messiah to convey this image among European Jewry.
