- Abstract
A study published in the journal Anaesthesia explores the association between the use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and persistent opioid requirements after total knee arthroplasty (TKA). The study, based on national insurance claims data from the USA, found that patients who received peri-operative NSAID prescriptions had higher odds of continued opioid prescriptions at 90 days post-surgery compared to those without NSAID prescriptions. While the study does not prove causality, it suggests a potential association that warrants further research. The authors recommend additional observational analyses using different data sources and exploring other surgical cohorts to validate and refine these findings.
