- Abstract
By applying multidimensional scaling analysis to House of Commons' Division Lists, maps of similarity of voting behaviour were prepared to assess the consistency and strength of groupings of MPs and to test existing assumptions. The votes of 550 MPs in all the divisions of one parliamentary session (187 in 1861) were analysed by the formation of ten overlapping batches of 100 MPs. Votes in eight separate subject categories of division were compared with voting behaviour across all divisions. Groups voting differently from other groups were easily identified, as was the varying composition of voting groups when different issues were at stake.
