- Abstract
The article discusses the origin and creation of the world with reference to the myths and beliefs of the Ho of Singbhum in Jharkhand, India. It is stated that the Ho myth narrates the creation of the world in stages, each in the form of episodes. The myth begins with the creation of self-created divine elements of Ote-Boram and Sirma Thakur or Singbonga, who were considered to be the primal cause at whose interventions the world was created. In the Ho myths, the world was considered to be created first, followed by the other elements including grass, trees, rocks and cattle. Singbonga is believed to have introduced the first human elements in the form of a little boy and a girl, who as a result of the use of rice beer, populated the world.
