- Abstract
Glass ionomer cement (GIC) is a versatile self-adhesive restorative material used in pediatric dentistry, known for its chemical adherence to tooth structure, biocompatibility, and fluoride release. However, its reduced strength and abrasion resistance limit its application in various clinical scenarios. To address this, the incorporation of fillers has been explored, with hydroxyapatite (HA) emerging as a promising option due to its biocompatibility and similarity to tooth enamel. This in vitro study aims to compare the microleakage, tensile strength, and bonding strength of GIC modified with Micro-HA and Nano-HA against conventional GIC. Twenty-seven extracted primary molars will be divided into three groups: GIC (control), GIC with Micro-HA, and GIC with Nano-HA (n = 9 per group). Only sound teeth with no caries, previous restorations, or fractures will be included. Specimens will undergo Class I cavity preparation to expose dentin surfaces for GIC bonding. Experimental groups will consist of 85% GIC and 15wt% Micro-HA or Nano-HA. After setting, specimens will undergo immersion in artificial saliva for 4 weeks followed by thermocycling. Evaluation after 4 weeks will involve assessing microleakage, tensile strength, and bonding strength to determine the impact of HA modification on GIC properties. This ongoing study aims to provide insights into the potential enhancement of GIC's performance through the incorporation of Micro and Nano-HA.
