The article presents a student activity to demonstrate why AM radio reception is lost when one goes under an overpass. The activity involves the use of an AM/FM radio, a cardboard box, aluminum foil, and chicken wire to wrap around the box. It is stated that radio waves are electromagnetic waves, which consist of changing electric and magnetic fields; and when electromagnetic waves encounter solid metal, the electrons in the metal respond to those waves.
