- Title
"Geronimo!" The Ideologies of Colonial and Indigenous Masculinities in Historical and Contemporary Representations about Apache Men.
- Authors
Kemper, Kevin R.
- Abstract
The article looks at U.S. and Apache depictions of indigenous masculinity. Particular focus is given to representations of the warrior Geronimo. According to the author, U.S. narratives surrounding Geronimo and his peers were designed to promote white manhood while denigrating indigenous manhood. Topics discussed include imperialism, U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt, hunting, and strength. The U.S. military's use of the name Geronimo as a code for terrorist Osama bin Laden is also discussed.
