- Abstract
The article looks at the career of French actresses Danielle Darrieux, Michèle Morgan and Micheline Presle in the U.S. film industry, examines the reception of their Hollywood films by French audience and compares the U.S. construction of French identity with the French understanding of the clash between France and Hollywood. The commercial success of the actresses' films in France was attributed to specific themes and deviation from Hollywood patriarchal norms. Factors linked to the mediocrity of the profile of the actresses in the U.S. are cited.
