- Title
Infectious disease: DARC matters.
- Abstract
The article highlights a research on a genetic mutation associated with the protein DARC that was conducted by Sunil Ahuja with his colleagues at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio. The research, which analyzed blood samples from more than 3,400 African Americans, discovered the link between DARC mutation and increased risk of HIV infection. The said mutation, which helps make Africans resistant to malaria, was found to have stopped the expression of the protein DARC in red blood cells.
