The article reports on a paper by M. Vergassola and colleagues which proposes a search algorithm that might assist engineers in designing efficient olfactory tracking robots. Because of the random nature of the odor plume, an exact model of the environment is impossible. Their search scheme avoids this problem by depending on a probability map of source location that is estimated from the history of detection and non-detection events.
