- Abstract
Crime in Spain has increased since 1978, but basically due to minor forms of crime. At the same time, fear of crime has only been considered an important problem in 2002 and 2003. Spain can be considered a metaphor of the most important criminal policy problems of Europeans: social cement of society is following a process of assimilating new cultures, international economic crisis adds anxiety to this confusing background. Terrorism and organized crime generates a feeling of lose of control and insecurity that does not correspond to the daily lives of most citizens, but it is transmitted by the media in a way that influences the political class, that reacts in restrictive ways and forgetting criminological knowledge. For these reasons, the scientific community must play a role in shaping public opinion and find ways to influence criminal policy.
