- Abstract
Equine coronavirus (ECoV), is considered an emerging enteric virus with reported morbidity rates ranging from 10 to 83% and fatality rates ranging about 11% in adult horses but most cases resolve with supportive care. Outbreaks of ECoV infection have been reported in Japan, Europe and the USA since 2010. Clinical signs include pyrexia, anorexia, lethargy, colic and diarrhea accompanied by leukopenia secondary to neutropenia and lymphopenia. Colic and changes in fecal consistency are seen in some cases. Clinical signs persist for a few days to one week and generally resolve with minimal supportive care. Specific diagnosis is made by ELISA and the detection of ECoV in feces by either RT-PCR and electron microscopy. Appropriate biosecurity measures and vaccination program control the spread of the virus. The modified-live bovine corona virus (BCoV), vaccine is safe to be administered to horses via various routes. It causes minimal virus shedding and results in development of detectable antibodies 27% of the vaccinates. This article presents possible health problem related to ECoV in stud farms.
