- Abstract
The ancient city of Stratonikeia is located in the old village settlement of Eskihisar in Yatağan district of modern Muğla. During the excavations carried out in the area, the remains of Byzantine pottery workshops were found on the eastern slope of the ancient road to the northwest of the city. The remains of eighteen kilns were used from end of the 10th century until beginning of the 13th century have been documented with excavations in Beybağ. It is understood that the pottery workshops have been mainly focused on production of amphoras, different kind of vessels produced for daily usage, as well as tiles, bricks and water pipes. The aim of this study is introducing the Middle Byzantine workshops found in Beybağ and defining the local production groups of ceramics. Clay deposits around Stratonikeia appear to be light gray tones close to gray since they are very poor in iron. In this respect, local clay of Stratonikeia differs from the clay deposits in Western Anatolia. Ceramic finds have been classified according to their functions as forms used in service, kitchen, storage and commercial activities. The production characteristics of the vessels have been evaluated according to their similarities with other settlements in Asia Minor and relation to dining habits in the Middle Byzantine period.
