- Abstract
The article wants to restore the importance of the ancient Church of the Santissimo Crocifisso of Numana, demolished in 1960s and which witnesses the importance of the crossing of the pilgrims for its historic and artistic work as well as the central focus for pilgrimages of the Via Lauretana. In the text the various figures of the artists active in the Sanctuary were appreised starting from the second half of the 15th century and also researched the construction history and the interior decoration, thanks to the analysis of unpublished archived documents. In particular the accurate examination of the archived documentation and the finding of a series of photographs of the church kept in the Historical Diocesan Archive of Ancona, have allowed to perceive new artistic elements which had been lost in time about Filippo Bellini (Urbino, 1550 ca. – Macerata, 1603) and Domenico Simonetti known as il Magatta (Ancona, 1685-1759), to whom certain artistic and decorative aspects are attributed to, on the bases of stylistic confrontation.
