- Abstract
The article discusses the key role played by science and cetaceans in the Cold War by analyzing the marine mammalogy research cooperation between the U.S. and Russia. Also cited are the dolphin studies by the U.S. Navy to enhance vessel design and sonar technology, the Navy's use of whales in military service, the utilization of whales to symbolize the endangered ocean environment and its impact on Cold War environmental diplomacy, and the accomplishments of the U.S. Office of Naval Research (ONR) in the development of oceanographic sciences.
